Come Away (2020)
Come Away (2020), a fantasy drama directed by Brenda Chapman in her live-action debut, pays homage to Peter Pan and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The film follows the adventures of three siblings – David, Peter, and Alice – who are coping with the loss of their eldest brother while trying to help their grieving parents. As the mother reads The Stolen Child by William Butler Yeats to her two boys and one girl, she shares the story of three similar siblings: David, Peter, and Alice. Living with their parents Jack and Rose Littleton in a house on the outskirts of London near a forest, the children let their imaginations soar. While Alice acts mature for her age, Peter lets his feral nature take over as he pretends to be different tribesmen and gods in the woods surrounding their home. During one of their excursions, they come across an eagle feather and a damaged boat, sparking discussion about getting it seaworthy. Rose’s sister Eleanor wants to sponsor David’s education due to his intelligence and potential shown during these adventures.
Tragedy befalls the family when, during a storm, David falls into the river while playing pirate and is fatally struck by lightning. Following his death, Jack reverts to his old gambling habits and Rose plans to create a green felt hat for David’s upcoming birthday (though complications arise when Jack’s latest model boat design is rejected). Meanwhile, Eleanor shifts her focus onto Alice, hoping to mold her into a refined young lady in order to navigate the challenges of being of mixed-race in high society. To make ends meet, Peter and Alice travel to London to sell a valuable heirloom silver pocket watch. During their trip, they encounter a group of pickpocketing street urchins who have stolen from a notorious criminal.
