Congo (1995), an American sci-fi action-adventure film, is based on Michael Crichton’s 1980 novel. Directed by Frank Marshall, it follows TraviCom employees Charles Travis and Jeffrey Weems as they search for rare blue diamonds with the potential to power a revolutionary communications laser. During their journey through the Congo jungle, they stumble upon the remnants of an ancient city near a remote volcano. However, when Karen Ross (Charles’s ex-fiancée and former CIA operative) and R.B. Travis (TraviCom CEO and Charles’s father) lose contact with the team while monitoring from headquarters, they discover the camp in ruins and scattered with bodies. A strange primate-like creature destroys their remote camera before Travis enlists Karen to lead another expedition to the same location.

Primatologist Peter Elliott and his assistant Richard are working with a mountain gorilla named Amy, who has learned human communication through sign language that is then translated into a digitized voice. Peter becomes worried when he sees Amy’s drawings of jungles and the Eye of Providence, prompting him to contemplate returning her to Africa. To aid in their mission, Karen teams up with Romanian philanthropist Herkermer Homolka. The group eventually reaches Uganda where they meet wilderness guide Monroe Kelly. However, their journey is met with complications as military leader Captain Wanta issues a warning about Homolka’s lack of trustworthiness and demands a large bribe for them to continue.
