Conspiracy Theory (1997)
Conspiracy Theory (1997), a political action thriller directed by Richard Donner, follows the events surrounding New York City taxi driver and self-proclaimed conspiracy theorist Jerry Fletcher. Jerry frequently shares his ideas with Alice Sutton, a lawyer at the U.S. Justice Department whom he once saved from a mugging. Unbeknownst to her, Jerry also spies on her at her home. Meanwhile, Alice is focused on solving the mystery of her father’s murder. In a state of paranoia, Jerry becomes convinced that he has uncovered CIA agents and follows them into a building, where he is captured. During interrogation, he is injected with LSD and subjected to torture. The effects of the drug trigger terrifying hallucinations and flashbacks for Jerry, but he manages to escape by incapacitating his interrogator through unconventional means.
After being recaptured, Jerry finds himself handcuffed to a hospital bed and forced into a chemically-induced slumber. During Alice’s visit, Jerry convinces her to swap his medical records with the criminal in the adjacent bed, or he fears his fate will be sealed by morning. However, upon Alice’s return the following day, the criminal has already passed away from what is believed to be a heart attack. To Jerry’s surprise, the hospital has been taken over by various government agencies, including an injured CIA psychiatrist named Dr. Jonas. In the midst of this chaos, Jerry cleverly feigns a heart attack and manages to escape once again, with Alice’s assistance. As Alice and FBI Agent Lowry sift through Jerry’s belongings for clues, they are interrupted by a team of CIA agents who seize everything in sight.
