Coogan's Bluff (1968)
Coogan’s Bluff (1968), an American crime thriller film directed and produced by Don Siegel, follows the story of Arizona deputy sheriff Walt Coogan. He is sent to New York City to extradite escaped killer James Ringerman, but Detective Lieutenant McElroy informs him that Ringerman is currently recovering from an LSD overdose and cannot be moved until cleared by doctors. To obtain extradition papers from the New York State Supreme Court, Coogan must first win over probation officer Julie Roth and take her out for lunch. Despite facing resistance at the prison hospital, Coogan manages to trick attendants and reach Ringerman. However, a surprise ambush by Ringerman’s girlfriend Linny and tavern owner Pushie results in his escape before Coogan can catch a flight back to Arizona.
Frustrated with the turn of events, Detective McElroy sternly warns Coogan against taking matters into his own hands while in New York. During a dinner at Roth’s apartment, Coogan discovers that Roth is Linny’s probation officer and he learns her address through his files. He then follows Linny to a club where she promises to lead him to Ringerman, but instead leads him to a pool hall. There, he becomes engaged in a violent fight with Pushie and several others. Despite putting up a good fight, Coogan is ultimately overpowered. However, after hearing sirens, the assailants flee the scene, leaving behind Coogan who has managed to kill three of them, including Pushie. The next day, Detective McElroy arrives at the destroyed bar and finds a cowboy hat on the floor.
