Corpse Bride (2005)
Corpse Bride (2005) is a stop-motion animated musical fantasy film directed by Tim Burton from a screenplay by John August, Caroline Thompson, and Pamela Pettler. It is based on characters created by Burton and Carlos Grangel. Set in an unnamed Victorian era town, the story follows the arranged marriage preparations of Victor Van Dort, son of nouveau riche fish merchants, and Victoria Everglot, daughter of impoverished aristocrats. Their union will not only elevate the social status of the Van Dort family but also restore the wealth of the Everglots (“According to Plan”). Despite some initial nervousness, Victor and Victoria quickly fall for each other upon meeting. However, their wedding rehearsal takes a chaotic turn when Victor becomes flustered and forgets his vows, drops the ring, and accidentally sets Lady Everglot’s dress ablaze. Seeking solace in a nearby forest, he recites his vows to a tree and places his wedding ring on an upturned root. But to his surprise, this root belongs to Emily – a dead girl dressed in a wedding gown who rises from her grave claiming to be Victor’s new wife.
While spending time with Emily, Victor discovers that her untimely death was caused by her fiancé on the night of their elopement. The thief had also taken the jewels and gold she brought with her. In this seemingly haunted place, Victor is overjoyed to be reunited with his long-departed dog, Scraps, and they form a strong bond. However, longing to return to his beloved Victoria, Victor employs trickery to persuade Emily into helping him reach the Land of the Living once more. He claims he wants her to meet his parents. With the help of Elder Gutknecht, who rules the underworld with kindness, they are granted temporary passage back to the world above. There, Victor finally reunites with his Victoria and confesses his desire to marry her without delay. But before they can seal it with a kiss, Emily discovers them and is overcome by feeling betrayed and hurt. She drags Victor back to the Land of the Dead in tears. In an attempt to justify herself, she accuses Victoria of being Victor’s other woman. However, it is revealed that it was actually Emily who was the other woman all along as she reveals that Victor never wanted to marry her.
