Crazy Heart (2009), an American drama written and directed by Scott Cooper in his feature directorial debut, is based on the 1987 novel of the same name by Thomas Cobb. The story was inspired by country singer Hank Thompson. Otis ‘Bad’ Blake, a 57-year-old alcoholic songwriter and former country music star, now makes a modest living performing in small-town bars throughout the southwestern United States. He has had four failed marriages (although there is mention of a fifth he does not discuss) and no family aside from his 28-year-old son whom he hasn’t seen in 24 years. Blake spends most of his time on the road, staying in budget motels and travelling alone in his trusty 1977 Chevrolet Suburban. The film begins with him arriving at a bowling alley for a show.
In Santa Fe, Blake crosses paths with Jean Craddock, a young journalist in search of a story. Despite her recent divorce and four-year-old son, Buddy, she isn’t hesitant to interview Blake after one of his performances. As they grow closer, Jean returns for another visit under the guise of gathering more material. Their bond leads to a romantic relationship. Thanks to Jean and her son’s influence, Blake starts to turn his life around. This includes rekindling his professional relationship with Tommy Sweet, a well-known country music star whom he had previously mentored. Although initially hesitant and experiencing a bruised ego at being the opening act for his former student’s concert, Blake eventually agrees to perform as the opener.
