In the film Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989), written and directed by Woody Allen, two main characters are introduced: Judah Rosenthal, a successful ophthalmologist, and Clifford Stern, a documentary filmmaker. Despite being a respected family man from the upper-class society, Judah is having an affair with flight attendant Dolores Paley. When Dolores realizes that Judah has no intention of leaving his marriage for her, she threatens to reveal their affair to his wife, Miriam. In addition, Dolores also knows about some questionable financial transactions Judah made before becoming wealthy which only adds to his worries. Seeking advice, Judah confides in Ben, a patient who happens to be a rabbi losing his vision. Ben urges him to be honest with his wife but Judah is not willing to risk his marriage.

Desperately seeking a solution, Judah turns to his brother, Jack, who happens to be a gangster. Jack agrees to hire a hitman to take out Dolores. In order to cover up the deed before it is discovered, Judah gathers letters and other belongings from her apartment. Consumed by guilt, Judah revisits the religious beliefs he had previously rejected, now realizing that a just God may be watching and judging him. Meanwhile, Cliff has been commissioned by his arrogant brother-in-law, Lester – a successful television producer – to create a documentary highlighting Lester’s life and achievements. However, as Cliff delves deeper into the project and starts poking fun at Lester, he begins to despise him. Amidst filming and mocking his subject, Cliff finds himself falling for Halley Reed – a fellow producer working with Lester.
