Crimson Tide (1995)
The movie Crimson Tide (1995), directed by Tony Scott and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, is an American submarine action thriller. An opening title card introduces the three most influential figures in the world: The U.S. President, the Russian President, and the captain of a U.S. nuclear submarine. In post-Soviet Russia, a civil war breaks out due to ongoing conflict in Chechnya. Loyal military units of Vladimir Radchenko, a Russian ultra-nationalist rebel leader, seize control of a nuclear missile installation and threaten nuclear warfare if opposed. In response to this threat, USS Alabama, a U.S. Navy ballistic missile submarine, is dispatched on patrol with orders to launch a pre-emptive nuclear strike if Radchenko attempts to arm his missiles.
The experienced Captain Frank Ramsey takes charge and selects Lieutenant Commander Ron Hunter as his new XO due to his extensive education in military history and tactics despite lacking combat experience. Conflicts arise between the strong-willed Ramsey and the methodical Hunter, heightened by Ramsey’s choice to conduct a missile drill during the turmoil caused by a fire in the galley that tragically claims the life of the chief mess officer. While Hunter aids in extinguishing the fire, he quietly questions the decision but is scolded by Ramsey for causing disunity. An Emergency Action Message instructing for a missile launch at the Russian base is received on Alabama. However, as preparations are made to follow through, another radio transmission is intercepted before an Akula-class submarine, operated by rebel Russians, attacks and damages Alabama’s communication equipment, resulting in an incomplete message.
