Cruella (2021)
Cruella (2021) is an American crime comedy-drama film from Walt Disney Pictures, Marc Platt Productions, and Gunn Films. The film follows the story of Estella Miller, a creative child with a knack for fashion but also a cruel side, earning her the nickname “Cruella” from her mother Catherine. Growing up ostracized due to her unique appearance and bold attitude, Estella’s rebellious behavior nearly gets her expelled from school. To avoid any tarnished reputation, Catherine withdraws Estella and plans to relocate them both to London. Along their journey, they stop at a lavish party where Estella sneaks in with her dog Buddy and discovers the world of fashion for the first time. However, things take a tragic turn when the host’s Dalmatians push Catherine off a cliff to her death as Estella watches on helplessly. With only Buddy by her side and wracked with guilt over her mother’s passing, Estella moves to London where she befriends two street urchins named Jasper and Horace, along with their Chihuahua Wink. In order to blend in with society, she decides to dye her hair red.
In 1974, after a decade had passed, Estella perfects her thievery and grifting skills by partnering with Jasper and Horace. Together with their loyal dogs, Buddy and Wink, they also work on creating clever disguises. However, when Estella’s birthday arrives in 1977, Jasper gives her a job at Liberty department store. Despite her fashion prowess, she is only given the role of a janitor and is unable to showcase her talents. One night, after getting drunk, Estella takes it upon herself to redecorate the window display and catches the attention of the Baroness – a well-known but strict haute couture designer. Impressed by Estella’s creativity, the Baroness offers her a highly coveted position at her fashion house. While working closely with the Baroness, Estella discovers that she is wearing Catherine’s necklace – which the Baroness claims to be a precious family heirloom that was previously stolen by an employee. Noticing this injustice, Estella enlists Jasper and Horace’s help to retrieve the necklace during the upcoming Black and White Ball hosted by the Baroness.
