Cry-Baby (1990), a film by John Waters, takes place in Baltimore in the year 1954. The protagonist, Wade ‘Cry-Baby’ Walker, is known for his ability to produce a solitary tear. He leads a group of rebellious individuals known as the ‘drapes’, which includes his sister Pepper, tough girl Mona ‘Hatchet-Face’ Malnorowski and her devoted boyfriend Milton Hackett, and sexually mature Wanda Woodward. Allison Vernon-Williams, a wealthy girl tired of conforming to societal norms, falls for Cry-Baby after they meet at a talent show at her grandmother’s Charm School. Despite her initial doubts, she accepts his invitation to a party at Turkey Point – a popular spot for the drapes.

Despite her initial doubts, Allison joins Cry-Baby on a trip to Turkey Point. There, Hatchet-Face, Pepper, and Wanda give her a dramatic ‘drape’ makeover before she joins Cry-Baby onstage for a duet. Later, they bond over their shared experiences as orphans: Cry-Baby divulges the tragic fate of his parents – both caught up in his father’s criminal actions – while Allison reveals the heartbreaking loss of her own parents in a plane crash. However, their conversation is interrupted by Allison’s jealous boyfriend Baldwin and his square friends. In a fit of rage, they cause chaos by defacing the Drapes’ cars with graffiti and destroying Cry-Baby’s beloved motorcycle – a special gift from his uncle Belvedere and grandmother Ramona Ricketts.
