Daddy and Them (2001)
Daddy and Them (2001), an American comedy-drama film, was written, directed, and starred in by Billy Bob Thornton. Filmed in 1998 following the success of Sling Blade, it was initially intended for theatrical release but was delayed by Miramax due to concerns over its commercial appeal. It finally premiered at the Newport International Film Festival on June 6, 2001 and was later shown on Showtime in January 2003 before being released on DVD on January 13, 2004 by Miramax.
The Montgomerys, Ruby and Claude, are a couple who struggle with insecurity and jealousy due to their past relationships. Claude once had an affair with Ruby’s older sister Rose when they were younger, while Ruby has had many strong boyfriends in the past. When Claude’s uncle Hazel is arrested for a violent incident, Ruby and Claude join Rose and Jewel on a trip to Arkansas to offer support to their extended family. During the journey, Jewel brings up numerous memories involving Claude, which bothers Ruby. Eventually they reach their destination at the Montgomerys’ home – a lower middle class family with evident communication issues.
