Dangerous Game (1993)
Drama film Dangerous Game (1993), by director Abel Ferrara and writer Nicholas St. John, follows motion picture director Eddie Israel’s journey from New York City to Hollywood, California. There, he rehearses ‘Mother of Mirrors’ with actors Sarah Jennings and Francis ‘Frank’ Burns, depicting a turbulent marriage between ‘Russell’, once a successful breadwinner, and his newly devout wife ‘Claire’. As the characters’ tensions rise onscreen, Eddie begins a relationship with Sarah and encourages Frank to use his drug addiction as inspiration for his role. During the filming of a difficult rape scene, Sarah exposes Frank’s use of method acting to justify an off-screen attempted assault.
Eddie’s devoted spouse, Madlyn, unexpectedly shows up on set with their young son, Tommy. Upon noticing Eddie’s preoccupation, Madlyn is forced to leave when her father suffers a fatal heart attack. With his wife gone, Eddie remains in Los Angeles to finish filming using increasingly aggressive tactics to extract a stellar performance from Sarah. Later that night, he boards a red-eye flight to make it in time for his father-in-law’s funeral in New York. There, Eddie admits to a long history of affairs, causing Madlyn to berate him for setting a poor example for their child. Overwhelmed with emotions, Eddie returns to Los Angeles and overdoses on drugs and alcohol, leaving his fate uncertain.
