Dangerous Liaisons (1988) is an American romantic drama film set in pre-Revolution Paris. Directed by Stephen Frears and written by Christopher Hampton, it is based on Hampton’s play Les liaisons dangereuses, which was adapted from Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ 1782 French novel of the same name. The story revolves around the Marquise de Merteuil seeking revenge on her ex-lover, the Comte de Bastide, who ended their relationship. In order to embarrass Bastide and soothe her wounded pride, she enlists the help of her former lover, the unprincipled Vicomte de Valmont. Merteuil asks Valmont to seduce Cécile de Volanges, a young virgin fiancée who has recently debuted into society after being sheltered in a convent. Meanwhile, Valmont has his sights set on seducing Madame de Tourvel, the wife of a member of Parliament who is currently staying with his aunt, Madame de Rosemonde.

Intrigued and disbelieving of Valmont’s arrogance in pursuing the virtuous and pious Tourvel, Merteuil proposes a bet: if Valmont somehow manages to seduce Tourvel and can provide written evidence, she will also lay with him. Never one to back down from a challenge, Valmont agrees. Despite his best efforts, Tourvel continues to reject his advances. In a desperate attempt to gain some leverage, he enlists the help of his page Azolan to seduce Tourvel’s maid Julie and obtain access to her personal letters. One of the intercepted letters is from Cécile’s mother and Merteuil’s cousin, Madame de Volanges, warning Tourvel about Valmont’s treacherous nature. Fueled by anger towards her accurate criticism of him, Valmont sets his sights on seducing Cécile as a form of revenge.
