Dante’s Peak (1997) is a disaster film helmed by director Roger Donaldson and penned by writer Leslie Bohem. In 1993, USGS volcanologist Harry Dalton and his fiancée-turned-partner Marianne are caught in an eruption in Colombia. Despite their attempt to escape, a lava bomb crashes into their truck, killing Marianne. Four years later, Harry is assigned by his supervisor Dr. Paul Dreyfus to investigate seismic activity around the town of Dante’s Peak, Washington – which sits next to a stratovolcano – despite the emotional toll his previous work has taken on him. Upon arrival, he meets Mayor Rachel Wando and her children Graham and Lauren. Rachel offers to bring Harry along as they visit her former mother-in-law Ruth, an elderly recluse who resides near the base of the volcano next to the lake.

While exploring, they come across dead trees and squirrels, as well as two deceased individuals in a hot spring. Harry intervenes to prevent Graham from jumping into the spring after seeing the bodies. He then directs Paul to contact a USGS team to monitor the volcano, but their initial assessment does not indicate any volcanic activity. Despite this, Paul advises against issuing an alert for the town. Nevertheless, Harry tries to persuade Rachel to prepare for a potential disaster while also building a relationship with her and her children. On one occasion, Harry and his colleague Terry inspect the summit’s crater until Terry gets trapped by a rock slide and breaks his leg. Luckily, both of them are rescued by helicopter.
