Dark Blue (2002) is an American crime thriller film, directed by Ron Shelton and written by David Ayer, based on a story by novelist James Ellroy. The setting is Los Angeles in 1992. We are immediately introduced to LAPD Sergeant Eldon Perry who is seen pacing nervously with a shotgun and pistol in a motel room. The scene then shifts back five days earlier when two men, Darryl Orchard and Gary Sidwell, rob a convenience store and commit murder in the process. These events trigger an internal hearing for Detective Bobby Keough, Perry’s partner, for his use of deadly force in a previous case. However, Keough is ultimately cleared of any wrongdoing. Perry and Keough celebrate Perry’s promotion with their superior, Jack Van Meter, who also happens to be Keough’s uncle.

Van Meter, who has a history of manipulating evidence, later visits Orchard and Sidwell’s house to take the stolen money from the safe. He scolds them for their reckless behavior during the robbery. Van Meter tasks Perry and Keough with looking into the robbery, while giving Orchard and Sidwell a fabricated alibi and instructing them to falsely accuse another person of the crime. In the midst of this, Assistant Chief Arthur Holland finds Perry’s testimony during Keough’s hearing to be dubious, raising doubts about whether he actually killed the suspect as charged. Beth Williamson, his assistant, delves into the men’s records and discovers that Keough is someone she previously had anonymous casual relations with.
