Dark Water (2005) is an American supernatural horror film directed by Walter Salles and written by Rafael Yglesias. A remake of the 2002 Japanese film, it tells the story of Dahlia, who finds herself in a custody battle with her ex-husband Kyle over their daughter Cecilia. While Kyle wants Cecilia to live near his apartment in Jersey City, Dahlia has found a more affordable option on Roosevelt Island, where she has also discovered a good school for her five-year-old. Eventually, they settle on an apartment just blocks away from Cecilia’s new school, but as they begin to settle in, strange things start happening. One day, while exploring the rooftop water tower, Cecilia comes across a Hello Kitty backpack. Soon after, dark water starts seeping through the bedroom ceiling. As they investigate further, they discover that the previous tenants – the Rimsky family – had experienced similar issues.

The concerned woman speaks to both the manager, Murray, and the superintendent, Veeck, regarding the water issue, but unfortunately no action is taken. She is also troubled by unsettling apparitions and a disturbing recurring dream in which a mother warns her to keep quiet about what she did to her own daughter or face harm. Cecilia’s teacher is also concerned when she learns about Cecilia’s ‘imaginary friend’ Natasha, and even Dahlia catches her talking to this imaginary friend. In the bathroom, Cecilia faints as dark water continues to flow from the fixtures. While Dahlia is preoccupied with meeting her lawyer Jeff Platzer, Kyle takes their daughter to his home for the night. Later on, Dahlia notices water spilling out of the nearby water tower and upon investigating, discovers Natasha’s lifeless body inside.
