Dark Waters (2019), an American legal thriller directed by Todd Haynes and written by Mario Correa and Matthew Michael Carnahan, follows the story of Robert Bilott’s battle against DuPont, a chemical manufacturing corporation. In 1998, Bilott is a corporate defense lawyer at the law firm Taft Stettinius & Hollister in Cincinnati, Ohio. One day, farmer Wilbur Tennant, who happens to know Bilott’s grandmother, reaches out to him for help with investigating unexplained animal deaths in Parkersburg, West Virginia. After connecting the deaths to DuPont, Tennant provides Bilott with a large collection of videotapes as evidence. During his visit to the Tennants’ farm, Bilott discovers that 190 cows have died from bizarre medical conditions like bloated organs, blackened teeth, and tumors. Upon being alerted about the case by DuPont attorney Phil Donnelly, who offers assistance in any way he can, Bilott files a small suit in order to obtain information through legal discovery about the chemicals dumped on the site.

After finding nothing useful in the EPA report, Robert realizes that the chemicals may not fall under the agency’s regulation. This leads to an angry confrontation with Phil at an industry event. In response, DuPont sends Robert numerous boxes in attempt to conceal the evidence. Upon further investigation, he discovers multiple mentions of PFOA – a chemical not found in any medical textbooks. He then learns that PFOA is the abbreviated term for perfluorooctanoic acid, commonly used in producing Teflon for nonstick frying pans and carpet flooring in American homes. Despite conducting tests on PFOA for decades and discovering its link to cancer and birth defects, DuPont chose not to make this information public. Additionally, they had been dumping toxic sludge uphill from Tennant’s farm for years. These forever chemicals, which do not leave the blood stream and accumulate over time, pose a major threat to the environment and human health.
