Mike Nichols directed Silkwood (1983), an American biographical drama. The film stars Meryl Streep, Kurt Russell, and Cher. Karen Silkwood works at the Kerr-McGee Cimarron Fuel Fabrication Site near Crescent, Oklahoma. She resides in a rundown house with her boyfriend Drew Stephens and lesbian friend Dolly Pelliker. Her job involves manufacturing MOX fuel rods for nuclear reactors, exposing her to radiation. As a union activist, she voices concerns about the potential negative impact of corporate practices on workers’ health. Additionally, she is in a legal battle with her ex-partner to gain more time with their three children. Due to a major contract for fabricating MOX fuel rods falling behind at the plant, employees are now required to work long hours and weekends overtime.

Karen suspects that safety reports are being falsified and corners are being cut by managers, potentially putting employees in danger. She takes her concerns to the union and becomes an active advocate for implementing safeguards. In order to make her voice heard, she travels to Washington, D.C. and testifies before the Atomic Energy Commission. However, when workers including Silkwood get exposed to radiation contamination, plant officials point fingers at her instead of addressing the issue. Upon discovering that weld sample radiographies have been doctored to conceal poor workmanship and records of insufficient safety measures have been altered, Karen decides to launch her own investigation.
