Darkman (1990)
Sam Raimi directed and co-wrote Darkman (1990), an American superhero film. The movie is based on one of Raimi’s short stories, paying tribute to Universal’s classic horror films from the 1930s. Dr. Peyton Westlake is a scientist who is working on a revolutionary synthetic skin formula to help burn victims. However, he struggles with a major flaw that causes the skin to disintegrate after exactly 99 minutes. His girlfriend, Julie Hastings, is an attorney who uncovers the ‘Belisarius Memorandum’, a damaging document that proves developer Louis Strack Jr. has been bribing members of the zoning commission. When she confronts Strack about it, he admits to his actions and reveals his plans to build a new city and create jobs. Meanwhile, crime boss Robert G. Durant is also after the document for his own gain.
While testing the synthetic skin with his assistant Yakitito in the lab, the power suddenly goes out and Westlake realizes that the skin is not photosensitive after exactly 100 minutes like they previously thought. Their joy is short lived as Durant and his gang arrive to demand the Memorandum, which Westlake is unaware of. During their search, Yakitito is killed and Westlake is severely beaten. They eventually discover the document and set up an explosion in the lab. Julie witnesses the blast while a burnt Westlake is flung into the river. He is brought to a hospital as a John Doe and undergoes a treatment that cuts off his physical pain but also removes his ability to feel touch. This leads to increased strength from adrenal overload but also causes mental instability.
