Day Shift (2022) is an American action comedy film directed by J. J. Perry, written by Tyler Tice and Shay Hatten from a story by Tice. The movie follows Bud Jablonski, a blue-collar dad who secretly spends his days hunting and killing vampires while seemingly working as a pool cleaner. One day, during a “cleaning job,” Bud witnesses a man leaving the house he’s working at and decides to investigate further. This leads him to encounter two vampires, an elderly woman and younger man, who happen to live in the house. After a fierce battle, Bud emerges victorious and obtains the vampires’ fangs with pliers. In need of money to support his family and cover expenses such as tuition fees for his daughter’s private school and braces, Bud attempts to sell the fangs at a pawn shop run by Troy. However, the prices offered are not enough to solve Bud’s financial troubles. To make matters worse, his ex-wife Jocelyn plans to move to Florida with their daughter, putting even more strain on Bud’s finances. Desperate for cash, he must turn back to the vampire hunting union.
Bud recruits his army comrade, “Big” John Elliot, to aid him in rejoining the union. Initially, the union leader, Ralph Seeger, declines due to Bud’s past expulsion from the group for his risky and aggressive hunting tactics. However, he is eventually given a final opportunity on strict terms: He must work exclusively during the day shift, which pays poorly, and must be supervised by Union Representative Seth. Seth is responsible for identifying and reporting any breaches of protocol made by Bud. Meanwhile, vampire Audrey locates the vampires slain by Bud. As she searches for their killer, she captures and interrogates Troy before ultimately killing him. In her final moments, she discloses that humans once revered vampires as deities and declares her intention to restore this hierarchy by establishing vampire colonies using human homes as bases to build an army. When Bud and Seth embark on a hunting trip together, despite several violations of union regulations committed by Bud, Seth chooses not to report them after learning of Bud’s desire to provide for his family with his earnings.
