Daylight (1996)
In Rob Cohen’s American disaster film, Daylight (1996), residents of upstate New York face a hazardous situation as they attempt to illegally dispose of toxic waste in New Jersey. Among the many individuals caught in this high-stakes scenario are struggling playwright Maddy Thompson, a bus full of juvenile offenders, a vacationing family, an elderly couple and their dog, and sports retailer Roy Nord. Meanwhile, a gang of grungy criminals fleeing from the NYPD after mugging a gem buyer take off in his car and enter the tunnel beneath the Hudson River. In their chaotic escape, they crash into one of the trucks carrying toxic waste, setting off a chain reaction that results in a massive explosion.
As the tunnel collapses and a destructive inferno engulfs the vehicles and people inside, Kit Latura, a former NYC Emergency Medical Services Chief turned taxi driver, witnesses the fiery disaster upon reaching the Manhattan entrance. Rushing to aid survivors, he encounters a former EMS coworker who warns of potential collapse due to extensive damage. Kit consults with tunnel authorities and discovers that many exits are closed or deemed dangerous. Despite the danger posed by the powerful ventilation system, he bravely ventures in to assist those trapped in the wreckage.
