Days of Heaven (1978) is a romantic period drama film directed and written by Terrence Malick. Set in 1916, the story follows Bill, a laborer from Chicago who accidentally kills his boss at a steel mill and flees with his girlfriend Abby and sister Linda to the Texas Panhandle. In order to avoid gossip, Bill and Abby pretend to be siblings when they are hired by a shy wealthy farmer as seasonal workers. The farmer’s doctor reveals he only has one year left to live but doesn’t specify the illness. As the farmer falls for Abby, Bill convinces her to marry him so they can inherit his wealth. However, their plans are thwarted when the farmer’s health does not decline as expected and causes suspicion among the foreman of the farm.
After coming to the realization of Bill’s true connection with Abby, the farmer becomes enraged when locusts and fires inflict damage upon his wheat fields. In a fit of anger, he sets off after Bill, who in turn defends himself with a screwdriver and makes a hasty escape with Abby and Linda. The police and foreman eventually track them down, resulting in Bill’s fatal demise while attempting to flee. As a result, Abby inherits the farmer’s wealth and leaves Linda at boarding school before departing on a train headed towards World War I with other soldiers. During this time, Linda takes matters into her own hands and runs away from school alongside one of her farm friends.
