Dead Alive (1992)
Directed by Peter Jackson, Dead Alive (1992) is a comedic horror film from New Zealand. In 1957, zoologist Stewart McAlden and his team successfully smuggle a rare Sumatran rat-monkey, a hybrid creature, off the island. However, their escape is disrupted by the native warriors who demand the return of the creature. During the chaos, Stewart is bitten by the rat-monkey and subsequently dismembered and killed by his fearful crew. Despite Stewart’s warning to the natives that ‘this monkey’s going to Newtown’, the group manages to ship it to Wellington Zoo. This is where we meet Lionel Cosgrove, who resides in Hataitai in a Victorian mansion with his mother Vera. The tragic death of Lionel’s father when he tried to save him at the beach still haunts him as an adult. To her dismay, Vera must come to terms with Lionel falling in love with Paquita María Sánchez, daughter of a Spanish Romani shopkeeper who firmly believes they are meant to be together.
During their date at Wellington Zoo, Vera joins the two and gets bitten by a rat-monkey. As time passes, she becomes increasingly frail, with peeling skin and even losing an ear while having lunch with friends. Eventually, she dies but then reanimates as a hungry zombie. After devouring Paquita’s dog and killing the nurse attending to her, Mrs. McTavish (who also turns into a zombie), Lionel locks both of them in the basement and keeps them subdued with animal tranquilizers. While visiting Paquita, her grandmother gives Lionel a lucky pendant. Despite being locked up, Vera manages to escape and is hit by a tram that takes her to Paquita’s shop. Though she survives, Lionel manages to sedate her before she attacks them again. At her funeral, he also has to tranquilize her to prevent any harm to the mourners. However, when he returns to the graveyard later on for more tranquilizers, he is mistaken for a necrophiliac and brutally beaten up by some hoodlums.
