Dead Man (1995)
The American acid Western film, Dead Man (1995), was both written and directed by Jim Jarmusch. It follows the story of William Blake, an accountant from Cleveland, Ohio, as he travels by train to Machine, a frontier company town. He is looking to start a new accounting job at the metal works. However, the fireman on the train warns him against this plan. Upon arriving in Machine, Blake realizes that the townspeople are not welcoming towards him. To his dismay, he discovers that the accounting position had already been filled by someone else. The town’s owner, John Dickinson, even resorts to threatening Blake with a gun to keep him away from the workplace. Jobless and penniless, Blake crosses paths with Thel Russell, a former prostitute who now sells paper flowers. She offers him shelter in her home. One night, they are interrupted by Thel’s ex-boyfriend Charlie who shoots at Blake but accidentally kills Thel instead when she tries to protect him.
After the bullet passes through Thel and wounds Blake, he retaliates by taking Charlie’s gun and fatally shooting him. In a swift escape, Blake jumps out the window and takes off on Charlie’s horse. It is revealed that Charlie’s father, Dickinson, has hired three assassins – Cole Wilson, Conway Twill, and Johnny ‘The Kid’ Pickett – to capture Blake, either alive or dead. Soon after regaining consciousness, Blake discovers a Native American man tending to his gunshot wound. The man introduces himself as Nobody and explains that the bullet cannot be removed from Blake’s chest without risking his life. This essentially makes Blake a living corpse in Nobody’s eyes. Upon hearing his full name, Nobody believes that Blake is a reincarnation of William Blake, an admired poet whom he idolizes but who remains unknown to Blake himself.
