Following the incident, Jamie is cleared of suspicion by detective Jim Lipton due to insufficient evidence. However, during this time Jamie discovers a peculiar note inside Billy’s box mentioning ‘Mary Shaw’, a deceased ventriloquist from their hometown Raven’s Fair. Upon arriving in Raven’s Fair, which has since deteriorated in condition, Jamie visits his estranged father Edward and his younger wife Ella. He enlists the help of local mortician Henry Walker to arrange for Lisa’s funeral. Despite Henry’s wife Marion advising against it, Jamie decides to bury Billy.
This decision leads to an encounter with Lipton who had been trailing him and finds his behavior suspect. According to Henry, Mary Shaw suffered a public humiliation when a young boy named Michael rudely pointed out that he could see her lips moving during her performance. Shortly after, Michael went missing and his family accused Mary of his disappearance, leading to her being lynched. As her dying wish, Mary requested to be turned into a doll and buried alongside her beloved collection, whom she referred to as her children. Fortunately, Henry was saved from the same fate due to his silence as Mary only targets those who scream at the sight of her true form. Jamie discovers that his great-uncle Michael was actually murdered by Mary Shaw.
