Dear God (1996)
Dear God (1996) is an American comedy film produced by Paramount Pictures and directed by Garry Marshall. Tom Turner, a con artist, finds himself in legal trouble for running scams to pay off his gambling debt to Junior, a loan shark. As punishment, the judge orders Tom to secure a full-time job within the week and keep it for at least a year, or face prison time. Desperate to avoid jail, Tom takes a job at the post office sorting mail in the dead letter office. Here, he meets some eccentric colleagues and learns about what happens to letters addressed to the Easter Bunny, Elvis Presley, and even God. One day, while reading a letter sent to God out of curiosity, Tom accidentally drops his paycheck which ends up being mailed back to its rightful owner – a struggling single mother.
Upon receiving his paycheck, Tom witnesses the positive impact it has made and departs without realizing that Rebecca, a burned-out workaholic lawyer colleague who volunteers her legal services, has observed him doing so. Suspecting that Tom purposely contributed the funds, Rebecca motivates the other employees of the dead letter office to continue his benevolent actions. Reluctantly taking on a leadership role within the group, Tom begins responding to more letters addressed to God at the post office. As they successfully fulfill more prayers and bring joy to people’s lives, Tom also attempts to pursue romance with Gloria, a coffee bar waitress, while avoiding any legal trouble.
