Death Sentence (2007)

Death Sentence (2007) is an American action thriller film directed by James Wan and starring Kevin Bacon as Nick Hume. After his son is brutally murdered by a gang member during an initiation ritual, Hume takes matters into his own hands to seek justice and protect his family from the gang’s retaliation. Loosely based on Brian Garfield’s novel of the same name, the film follows Hume as he navigates through the dangerous world of revenge. Living in Columbia, South Carolina, Hume attends his son Brendan’s hockey game before stopping for gas in a rough neighborhood. During what appears to be a robbery at the gas station, Joe Darley, a new gang member, uses a machete to fatally wound Brendan. In a desperate attempt to identify the killer, Hume confronts the thugs and uncovers Joe’s face behind a mask. Although Joe manages to escape before being struck by a car, Brendan does not survive and Hume rushes him to the hospital where he tragically passes away. As Nick struggles to cope with his loss, his younger son Lucas experiences survivor guilt.
After Nick identifies Joe in a police line-up, he discovers that Joe will only receive a light sentence since there isn’t enough evidence for a trial. However, at a pre-trial hearing Nick changes his identification and Joe is released. Later on, Nick follows the gang to their hideout and finds Joe alone. In a fit of rage, Nick stabs Joe to death. This act angers the gang leader, Billy, who seeks revenge against Nick. The situation escalates when Nick is quickly identified as the killer and the gang ambushes him on the street. A tense chase ensues, taking place inside a car park. Despite being pursued by the gang, Nick manages to escape in his car, causing another member of the gang to die in the process. Eventually, a suitcase that Nick dropped during the chase is delivered to his office. Inside he finds a phone number which he calls, only for Billy – who turns out to be Joe’s brother – to answer. In a chilling warning, Billy reveals that Nick has brought upon himself and his family a ‘death sentence’ with his actions.
