Deep Blue Sea (1999) is an American science fiction horror film directed by Renny Harlin. In a remote underwater facility, doctors Susan McCallister and Jim Whitlock are conducting research on mako sharks to reactivate dormant human brain cells found in Alzheimer’s disease patients. This leads to chaos when one of the sharks escapes and attempts to attack a boat full of young adults. In response, corporate executive Russell Franklin is sent to investigate. While testing a certain protein complex removed from the largest shark’s brain tissue, Jim loses his arm when the shark awakens in the laboratory. The tower operator, Brenda Kerns, calls for a helicopter to evacuate Jim amidst heavy rain and strong winds.

However, things take a dangerous turn when the largest shark grabs onto the stretcher and causes massive explosions that severely damage the facility, pulling the helicopter into its wreckage. At the lab, Susan, Franklin, wrangler Carter Blake, marine biologist Janice Higgins, and engineer Tom Scoggins watch in shock as a shark smashes a stretcher into the main window. The window shatters, causing Jim to drown and the facility to flood. Taking shelter at the wet entry, the group devises a plan to use a submersible to escape. It is then revealed by Susan that she and Jim had genetically modified the sharks to enhance their brain size in order to extract more protein. This action was against protocol and resulted in the sharks becoming smarter and deadlier.
