Deep Water (2022) is an erotic psychological thriller film directed by Adrian Lyne, from a screenplay by Zach Helm and Sam Levinson, based on the 1957 novel of the same name by Patricia Highsmith. The story follows the lives of Melinda and Vic Van Allen and their daughter Trixie, who reside in Little Wesley, Louisiana. Vic has retired early after designing navigation chips for military drones, while Melinda openly takes lovers – even in their shared home. Their unique arrangement causes concern among their friends, and as Vic becomes increasingly jealous and Melinda yearns for more passion, tensions rise. Melinda invites her latest lover Joel to a neighbor’s party where Vic reveals to him in secret that he murdered her previous lover Martin. This revelation spreads throughout their circle of friends, causing suspicion from noir writer Don Wilson. When Joel comes over for dinner with the Van Allen family, Vic further elaborates on the details of Martin’s death – terrifying Joel enough to leave town. However, things take an unexpected turn when a news report reveals that Martin’s body has been found with gunshot wounds and a suspect has been taken into custody.
After giving money to her new lover and piano teacher, Charlie, Melinda invites him to a pool party with Vic. While everyone heads inside due to rain, Melinda and Vic are left alone in the water. Tragically, Charlie is later found drowned in the pool, leading the police to question everyone at the party. Melinda is quick to point fingers at Vic for Charlie’s death. During an interaction with Kelly, Don’s wife, Vic learns that both she and Melinda believe he murdered Charlie. He then discovers they have hired a private investigator to follow him. In a confrontation with Don in front of his family, Vic expresses his anger over being accused of such a heinous crime. Meanwhile, Melinda reconnects with an ex-boyfriend named Tony and mentions moving to Brazil with him and their daughter Trixie. As Vic overhears their conversation, he becomes even more jealous when she invites Tony into her bedroom for dinner.
