Deepwater Horizon (2016)
Deepwater Horizon (2016) is a biographical film about the disastrous explosion and oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The incident occurred on April 20, 2010, when an oil drilling rig called Deepwater Horizon, operated by contractor Transocean for BP, was completing drilling off the coast of Louisiana. Surprised by the decision of BP managers Donald Vidrine and Robert Kaluza to sed home workers without conducting a cement bond log (CBL), Chief Electronics Technician Mike Williams and Offshore Installation Manager James Harrell take action. Harrell convinces Vidrine to carry out a negative pressure test, which shows that the cement has not properly sealed the well from high-pressure reservoirs. Despite this finding, Vidrine disputes it and orders a second test. After claiming success with the second test, Vidrine pressures Senior Toolpusher Jason Anderson to run more tests and to prepare the rig for its next job by removing drilling mud.
The operation initially proceeds smoothly, but eventually the cement job fails completely. This triggers a massive blowout that unfortunately causes the deaths of Weise, Roshto, and most of the drill team members. Fortunately, Holloway and Vidrine are able to evacuate in time. However, a series of equipment malfunctions and an unsuccessful attempt to seal the well result in the ignition of oil and sadly claim Anderson’s life and the lives of other toolpushers. Fleytas, the rig’s Dynamic Position Operator, tries to inform the Coast Guard but is overruled by her superior, Captain Kuchta. He believes that there is no immediate danger until flames erupt from the rig and he makes his own call for help. Sadly, with oil now gushing into the ocean, a pelican coated in oil flies onto the bridge of another vessel called Damon Bankston. The bird dies and the vessel begins heading towards the rig while workers desperately try to evacuate. Eventually, a rescue team is sent out after seeing the rig catch fire.
