Defending Jacob (2020)
Based on William Landay’s 2012 novel, Defending Jacob (2020) is an American crime drama miniseries produced by Apple TV+. Created and written by Mark Bomback and directed by Morten Tyldum, the series has received positive reviews from critics for its strong performances (particularly from Evans, Dockery, and Martell), emotional depth, and ambiguity. However, some have criticized the pacing, length, and ending. The miniseries was recently released on Blu-ray and DVD by Paramount Home Entertainment on July 6th, 2021. It follows Assistant District Attorney Andy Barber and his wife Laurie as they grapple with the accusation that their 14-year-old son, Jacob, may be a murderer.
ADA Neal Loguidice interrogates Andy Barber before a grand jury. Prior to this, Andy had been a highly regarded ADA and led a contented life with his wife Laurie and their 14-year-old son Jacob in Newton, Massachusetts. The murder of Ben Rifkin, a classmate of Jacob’s who was found stabbed in the nearby park, is assigned to Andy despite Loguidice’s objections due to a potential conflict of interest. Along with Detective Pam Duffy, they question students at the school but are unable to uncover a motive for the crime. In private, Jacob reveals to his parents that he did not like Ben and expresses frustration over the insincere sympathy shown by his peers after the tragedy. Meanwhile, Duffy identifies Leonard Patz, a convicted sex offender, as a possible suspect but suggests waiting for concrete evidence before apprehending him. That evening, while browsing an online memorial for Ben, Andy comes across unsettling comments including one from Jacob’s friend Derek accusing him of killing Ben. Concerned, Andy searches Jacob’s room and discovers a knife matching the description of the murder weapon hidden in his sock drawer.
