Dementia 13 (1963)
Dementia 13 (1963) is an independently made black-and-white horror-thriller film produced by Roger Corman, and written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola in his feature film directorial debut. While rowing in the middle of a dark lake, John Haloran and his young wife Louise have a heated argument about his wealthy mother’s will. Louise is distressed that everything is designated for charity under the name ‘Kathleen’. Eventually, the argument escalates and John suffers a heart attack from the physical exertion. He warns Louise that if he passes before his mother, she won’t receive any inheritance, and then he passes away. In response, Louise disposes of his body overboard, causing it to sink to the bottom of the lake.
Louise has a cunning scheme to gain a spot in the family inheritance. She composes a letter to her mother-in-law, Lady Haloran, requesting an invite to their Irish castle while her husband is away on business. During the visit, John’s brothers, Billy and Richard, participate in an unusual ritual with their mother to honor their late sister Kathleen who tragically passed away years ago in a drowning incident. Lady Haloran remains deeply affected by her daughter’s death and faints every year during this ceremony. As Louise aids her into the castle, Lady Haloran confides that she fainted because one of the flowers she tossed onto Kathleen’s grave had withered upon touching it.
