Demolition Man (1993) is a gripping American sci-fi action flick, marking director Marco Brambilla’s debut. Three years later, notorious criminal Simon Phoenix takes control of a bus and barricades himself in an abandoned building. LAPD Sergeant John Spartan, known as ‘The Demolition Man’, charges in to take down Phoenix, disregarding orders and causing extensive destruction. However, when a thermal scan reveals no sign of hostages, Spartan still enters the building where he finds Phoenix setting off explosives. Following the devastation, bodies are discovered in the wreckage and Phoenix accuses Spartan of knowingly attacking despite their presence. They are both sentenced to lengthy terms in the futuristic ‘California Cryo-Penitentiary’, where inmates are cryogenically suspended and subjected to subconscious rehabilitation techniques.
In the year 2032, San Angeles, a metropolis created by joining Los Angeles, San Diego, and Santa Barbara, appears to be a harmonious utopia under the guidance of Dr. Raymond Cocteau. After Phoenix is unfrozen for a parole hearing, he escapes from the cryo-prison using a secret password that he doesn’t recall learning. He proceeds to kill his guards and the warden before infiltrating the city. The police officers – unaccustomed to violent crimes – are easily overpowered and killed by Phoenix. One of these officers is Lieutenant Lenina Huxley, a dedicated member of the SAPD who is captivated by 20th-century culture. She discovers information about Spartan’s past from veteran officer Zachary Lamb and relies on his advice that their best shot at stopping Phoenix is finding someone with both experience and mindset to anticipate his moves.
