Den of Thieves (2018)
The American heist film, Den of Thieves (2018), was written, directed, and produced by Christian Gudegast. In Los Angeles, a group of ex-MARSOC Marines, led by Ray Merrimen, take control of an armored truck. A violent confrontation with law enforcement results in casualties, including one of Merrimen’s men. The culprits flee with the empty truck. Detective Nick ‘Big Nick’ O’Brien and his team from the Major Crimes Unit are assigned to investigate the robbery. They suspect recently released parolee, Merrimen, as the mastermind behind it. During their investigation, Nick’s team abducts Donnie Wilson, a bartender who admits to driving for the thieves but claims he was unarmed. Donnie reveals that the crew had stolen a large amount of money from a stadium but denies knowledge of their future plans before being let go. Meanwhile, Merrimen and his team continue to plan their next job – robbing the heavily guarded Federal Reserve – where they intend to steal millions of dollars in old bills before they are destroyed each day.
Nick’s team follows Donnie, a new Chinese food delivery driver who unexpectedly gains access inside the Federal Reserve. After a tense confrontation with Nick, Merrimen’s crew begins to suspect that Donnie may be working for the authorities. Under the threat of a gun, Donnie reveals that he was questioned by Nick, and surprisingly, Merrimen orders him to inform Nick about the planned heist. Despite informing Nick about the heist, Donnie denies having any knowledge of its location. Meanwhile, Nick has an affair with Merrimen’s girlfriend, who follows her partner’s instructions and reveals that they plan to rob a bank in Pico Rivera. On the day of the heist, as Nick’s team surveils the area nearby, Merrimen’s crew takes over the Pico Rivera Savings & Loan bank and holds hostages for ransom and a helicopter. When negotiations with the FBI fail, one of the hostages is seemingly executed by the thieves. The crew then proceeds to access the vault and set off explosives inside, causing Nick to realize that this is not their typical modus operandi.
