Desperate Hours (1990)
Directed by Michael Cimino, Desperate Hours (1990) is an American neo-noir action thriller film. This remake of the 1955 film and adaptation of the 1954 novel by Joseph Hayes was written by Hayes himself and co-written by Cimino. In Utah, defense lawyer Nancy Breyers finds herself inexplicably infatuated with her client, intelligent yet sociopathic convict Michael Bosworth. During a courtroom hearing, Nancy slips Bosworth a gun and they escape together when he savagely kills a guard. After tearing at Nancy’s clothing and leaving her behind, Bosworth flees with his brother Wally and their hulking, half-witted partner Albert. Eventually, Bosworth switches cars with one provided by Nancy in a remote location.
Meanwhile, Vietnam war hero Tim Cornell returns to his previous residence with his ex-partner Nora and her two children—15-year-old May and 8-year-old Zack. Tim and Nora’s relationship ended due to his affair with a younger woman, but he is determined to patch things up with the woman he still loves. As they wait for Nancy to catch up with them, the Bosworth brothers and Albert select the Cornells’ house as their temporary hideout, randomly spotting it while driving by. The Bosworths gather personal information about the Cornells, ultimately taking all of them captive one by one. Despite Nancy’s attempt to play innocent, FBI agent Brenda Chandler sees right through her facade and closely monitors her actions. In exchange for a reduced sentence, Nancy makes a deal with Chandler and agrees to betray the Bosworths.
