Desperation (2006) is an American made-for-TV horror film based on Stephen King’s 1996 novel of the same name. The teleplay was written by King himself. While driving through the Nevada desert, Peter and Mary Jackson, a young couple, are stopped by Collie Entragian, the local sheriff. Despite their innocence, they are accused of possessing marijuana and taken to a police station in the nearby mining town of Desperation. Upon their arrival at the station, they come across a disturbing sight: a little girl lying dead on the floor. In an act of violence, Entragian shoots and kills Peter before throwing Mary into a jail cell with other prisoners including David Carver, his parents Ralph and Ellen, and an elderly man named Tom Billingsley. It is later revealed that the little girl is named Pie and is the daughter of the Carvers.
Once Entragian leaves them alone, David turns to prayer as he has done since losing his best friend Brian in a tragic accident caused by a drunk driver. As Steve Ames drives his truck, he follows famous author Johnny Marinville, his current employer. Along the way, he picks up a hitchhiker named Cynthia Smith. When Johnny takes a stop in the desert to relieve himself, Entragian suddenly appears behind him. Initially claiming to be a big fan, Entragian then discovers the same bag of marijuana he had received from Peter and Mary in Johnny’s motorcycle bag. This discovery leads to a violent beating and arrest of Johnny by Entragian. Later at the police station, Ellen questions David about his persistence in praying. In response, David explains that he believes God intervened when his friend Brian was struck by a drunk driver while they were biking together.
