In the 2017 animated comedy Despicable Me 3 (2017), produced by Illumination and distributed by Universal Pictures, married AVL agents Felonious Gru and Lucy Wilde are tasked with recovering the Dumont Diamond from Balthazar Bratt, a former child star turned super-villain. While Gru successfully retrieves the diamond, Bratt manages to escape. Upon returning to AVL headquarters, director Silas Ramsbottom reveals his retirement and appoints Valerie Da Vinci as his successor. Da Vinci dismisses Gru and Lucy due to their failure to capture Bratt. Back at home, the couple informs their adopted daughters Margo, Edith, and Agnes of their dismissal but assures them that they will find new jobs soon. However, Gru is unwilling to return to his life as a super-villain and with his assistant Dr. Nefario accidentally frozen in carbonite, most of the Minions led by Mel leave him to pursue other opportunities. This ultimately leads the group into trouble when they accidentally crash into a television studio and end up in jail.
Fritz, a butler, delivers an invitation from Gru’s long-lost twin Dru from Freedonia. Upon meeting Dru, the family is taken aback by his opulent mansion and vast fortune. Meanwhile, Bratt once again snatches the diamond with plans to utilize it for his revenge against Hollywood through a giant robot. Dru informs Gru that their late father was a renowned super-villain known as ‘the Bald Terror’ and the true source of their wealth and advancements in technology. Dru asks Gru to teach him how to follow in their father’s footsteps, but Gru refuses to embrace his old villainous ways. As Lucy navigates her new role as a mother, Gru and Dru bond while taking their father’s high-tech vehicle for a joyride.
