Devil in a Blue Dress (1995)
Devil in a Blue Dress (1995), an American neo-noir mystery thriller film, was written and directed by Carl Franklin based on Walter Mosley’s novel of the same name. Set in the Summer of 1948 in Los Angeles, it follows Ezekiel ‘Easy’ Rawlins after he is laid off from his job at Champion Aircraft and needs to make ends meet. Easy’s bartender friend Joppy introduces him to DeWitt Albright, a white P.I. who is searching for Daphne Monet, a missing white woman. Despite feeling anxious about meeting Albright due to past experiences with someone similar, Easy agrees to help find Daphne. Her disappearance has also caused her wealthy fiancé, Todd Carter, to drop out of the Los Angeles mayoral race. In exchange for his services, Albright pays Easy to scour the popular juke joints along Central Avenue where Daphne is known to frequent.
Easy’s search begins at an illegal club, where the bouncer, Junior Fornay, ejects a white man. Later, Easy learns that Coretta James, girlfriend of his friend Dupree Brouchard, is a confidant of Daphne. Spending the night with Coretta leads Easy to discover Daphne’s involvement with gangster Frank Green. Albright arranges a meeting at the Malibu pier, but before they can meet, Easy is confronted by racist white youths. After Albright violently deals with them, Easy informs him about Green and receives another payment for his efforts. However, upon returning home, Easy is arrested by LAPD homicide detectives who reveal that Coretta has been murdered. After being interrogated and beaten before being released, he meets Matthew Terell, the remaining mayoral candidate.
