Devs (2020), the American science fiction thriller miniseries from creator, writer, and director Alex Garland, made its debut on March 5, 2020, exclusively on FX on Hulu. Protagonist Lily Chan is a software engineer at Amaya, a quantum computing corporation led by Forest. As she becomes entangled in the mysterious circumstances surrounding her boyfriend’s death on his first day at Amaya’s Devs division, Lily’s world is turned upside down.

Lily, who is part of Amaya’s encryption division, shares a home with her boyfriend and colleague Sergei in San Francisco. To her surprise, Forest – the CEO of Amaya – offers Sergei the highly sought-after opportunity to join the “Devs” team, responsible for the company’s secretive quantum computing endeavors. Protected by a Faraday cage, this team operates from an elegant and advanced lab located in a bunker. Although Sergei asks about his new role, Forest provides few details and assures him that everything will become clear. In secret, however, Sergei uses his wristwatch to record code from the project. Later that night, Forest confronts Sergei about theft and has Kenton – Amaya’s head of security – suffocate him with a plastic bag. Concerned when Sergei fails to return home, Lily turns to Kenton and Forest for help. While they show her footage supposedly depicting Sergei leaving the building and company premises, Lily remains skeptical and decides to download a backup of his phone. Upon discovering a password-protected program disguised as Sudoku – a game Sergei disliked – she enlists the help of her ex-boyfriend Jamie to crack it. However, he declines to assist her.
