Dirty Money (1972)
Dirty Money (1972) is a crime thriller film, the final work of director Jean-Pierre Melville before his passing the following year. On a rainy winter day in Saint-Jean-de-Monts, France, Simon and his three accomplices carry out a bank heist. The team consists of Marc Albouis and Paul Weber, who enter the bank with Simon, and Louis Costa, their designated getaway driver who remains outside. As they prepare to leave the scene, a teller triggers the alarm and Marc is caught in the crossfire, ultimately causing him to shoot and fatally wound the teller. The group flees with only a portion of their intended loot and heads back to Paris. There, they secretly admit Marc into a private clinic under an assumed name – ‘Schmidt’.
Meanwhile, Commissaire Edouard Coleman spends his nights patrolling Paris in search of criminal activity. He also meets with various informants, including Gaby – a transgender sex worker who currently provides valuable intel about an upcoming drug shipment involving one of her clients. After hours, Edouard visits Simon’s nightclub and indulges in playing piano while Simon’s girlfriend, Cathy looks on. After returning from Saint-Jean-de-Monts, Simon is welcomed by Edouard who is then called away by Inspector Morand. As the media reveals that one of the attackers sustained injuries during the heist, Simon, Louis and Paul make a plan to move Marc from the clinic before the authorities arrive. However, a nurse denies their request because of Marc’s condition.
