Divergent (2014), an American film directed by Neil Burger, is based on Veronica Roth’s novel of the same name. Set in a dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions: Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite. The Factionless make up the rest of the population but hold no status or privileges. At sixteen years old, children undergo a serum-induced psychological aptitude test to determine their best-suited faction. They can then choose any faction at the Choosing Ceremony. Beatrice Prior was born and raised in Abnegation, which controls the government. Her father Andrew is part of the ruling council along with Abnegation’s leader, Marcus Eaton. Despite her proctor Tori Wu recording her as Abnegation due to her Divergent status- showing qualities from multiple factions such as Abnegation, Erudite, and Dauntless- Beatrice has equal abilities in each faction.
Tori warns her to conceal her true results, as Divergents possess the ability to think independently and sense any injected serums. This poses a threat to the government’s control over society. At the Choosing Ceremony, Beatrice’s brother Caleb opts for Erudite while she ultimately chooses Dauntless after some hesitation. Upon arrival, she meets Christina, Al, and Will – all fellow transfers from different factions. Eric Coulter, a merciless Dauntless leader, makes it clear that those who do not meet the faction’s standards of unwavering commitment and fearlessness will end up Factionless. Without hesitation, Beatrice volunteers to jump into a dark hole from a tall building and successfully lands in a net below. When her instructor Four inquires about her name, she simply responds with ‘Tris’, shedding her past identity.
