Django Unchained (2012)
Django Unchained (2012), a Quentin Tarantino production, takes us to 1858 Texas where two brothers, Ace and Dicky Speck, are seen driving enslaved men and women. One of these slaves is Django, who has been torn apart from his wife Broomhilda von Shaft – an English and German-speaking house slave. The group is stopped by Dr. King Schultz, a former dentist turned bounty hunter, who is looking to buy Django for his knowledge on the notorious Brittle brothers. When Ace refuses to cooperate, Schultz takes matters into his own hands by killing him and using Dicky’s horse as leverage. He then advises the rest of the slaves to seek revenge. In exchange for their help in locating the Brittle brothers, Schultz offers Django not only his freedom but also $75.
After successfully taking down the notorious Brittle brothers at Spencer ‘Big Daddy’ Bennett’s plantation in Tennessee, Django and Schultz find themselves on the run from an armed posse led by Bennett himself. In a clever move, Schultz sets off a trap of explosives to halt their pursuit, giving Django the opportunity to eliminate Bennett for good. Feeling responsible for Django’s well-being, Schultz agrees to aid him in his quest to rescue Broomhilda, whom they soon learn is held captive by Calvin J. Candie, a member of the wealthy elite known for his ruthless ‘Candyland’ plantation in Mississippi. Under Schultz’s guidance, Django hones his skills as a bounty hunter and together they take on several successful missions before arriving in Mississippi just as spring arrives. It is there that they discover the true horror of Broomhilda’s situation – owned by Candie and forced to witness brutal ‘Mandingo’ fights between enslaved men at the mercy of her cruel master.
