The American biographical crime drama film Dog Day Afternoon (1975), directed by Sidney Lumet, follows Sonny Wortzik’s first-time attempt to rob the First Brooklyn Savings Bank on August 22, 1972 with his friends Salvatore ‘Sal’ Naturile and Stevie. However, their plan quickly falls apart as Stevie becomes overwhelmed and runs away. Despite arriving after the daily cash pickup, Sonny and his accomplices only find $1,100 in cash. In a desperate move, Sonny takes the bank’s traveler’s checks and sets fire to the register in a trash can. The smoke draws attention from outside, leading to the police surrounding the building. With no way out, Sonny and his partner take the bank employees hostage. When Police Detective Sergeant Eugene Moretti calls the bank, a panicked Sonny attempts to bluff that he is willing to harm the hostages.

Sal reassures Sonny of his readiness to use force, if necessary. As a gesture of trust, Sonny lets the security guard go when he suffers an asthma attack. Moretti convinces Sonny to come out with him. Taking the head teller as a shield, Sonny engages in a conversation with Moretti that reaches its peak when he shouts ‘Attica! Attica!’ in reference to the recent riot at Attica Prison. The crowd begins cheering for Sonny and he demands a vehicle to take him and Sal to the airport, where they have a jet waiting. Additionally, he requests pizzas for the hostages and for his wife to be brought to the bank. Just then, Sonny’s partner, Leon Shermer, arrives and reveals that they were robbing the bank to fund his sex reassignment surgery. He also reveals that Sonny has children with his estranged wife, Angie.
