Directed by Taylor Hackford, Dolores Claiborne (1995) is an American psychological thriller drama film based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King. The story follows Dolores Claiborne, who works as a domestic servant for her elderly employer, Vera Donovan, on Little Tall Island in Maine. One day, Dolores and Vera have a struggle which results in Vera falling down the stairs. After this incident, Dolores is caught by the mailman who sees her standing over Vera with a rolling pin. Unfortunately, Vera passes away and a murder investigation begins. In light of these events, Selena St. George – Dolores’s estranged daughter and a successful New York City journalist struggling with depression and substance abuse – reluctantly comes to town to support her mother, despite her own doubts about Dolores’s innocence.
Despite Dolores’ insistence that she did not kill Vera, the town remains skeptical due to their belief that she killed her husband, Joe St. George, 18 years prior. Detective John Mackey, who handled Joe’s murder case, is determined to see Dolores sentenced to life in prison. In 1975, Joe was an abusive alcoholic and also secretly molesting Selena, who at the time was only 13 years old. To escape his abuse and save money for Selena’s education, Dolores took a cleaning job for Vera. However, when Dolores discovered the stolen money from the bank meant for their escape, she confided in Vera about the situation. It was then that Vera revealed a disturbing postscript: she had orchestrated her own husband’s death in a car accident to protect herself from his abuse.
