Don Juan DeMarco (1995)
Don Juan DeMarco (1995) is an American romantic comedy-drama film starring Johnny Depp as John Arnold DeMarco, a 21-year-old man who truly believes he is Don Juan, the greatest lover in the world. He dresses like Zorro with a similar mask, hat, and cape, and even goes by the name Don Juan. However, his passionate affair leads him to contemplate suicide. Psychiatrist Jack Mickler intervenes at the billboard where John plans to take his life by pretending to be Don Octavio de Flores. As a result, John is held for a ten-day evaluation at a mental institution. Without medicating him, Mickler conducts the evaluation before his retirement. While posing as Don Octavio, Mickler listens to John’s story of how he came to believe he was Don Juan: Born in Mexico, he had an affair with his school tutor that ultimately led to his father’s death in a swordfight.
While listening to the story, Mickler picks up on inconsistencies, like John’s Castilian accent, but he doesn’t let it interrupt their conversation. At home, Mickler’s marriage to his wife, Marilyn, lacks passion. However, as he sees the effect of John’s presence on the staff – distracting women and dancing with a male attendant on the lawn – he becomes intrigued and begins listening to opera at home. This also helps reignite the passion in his marriage. Later, Mickler meets with John’s grandmother who reveals that John is originally from Phoenix, Arizona and that his father passed away in a car accident.
