Donnie Brasco (1997)
Donnie Brasco (1997) is an American crime drama film directed by Mike Newell. Set in 1978 New York City, it follows the story of Lefty Ruggiero, an aging enforcer in the Bonanno crime family, and Joseph D. Pistone, a young FBI agent undercover as jewel thief ‘Donnie Brasco’. When Donnie questions the authenticity of a diamond acquired by Lefty from a strip club owner and takes revenge on his behalf, their partnership begins. Under Lefty’s guidance, Donnie learns about the rules of the Mafia and meets his colleagues in the crew – Sonny Black, Nicky, Paulie, and rival leader Sonny Red. After the family boss is killed, Sonny Black is promoted to lead the crew which causes tension with Lefty who believes he deserves it more due to his years of service.
As they carry out successful shakedowns and hijackings in the city, Donnie continues to gather information for the FBI through wiretap recordings while playing his role as an associate within Lefty’s crew. Whilst working on the Donnie Brasco operation, Pistone develops a sincere connection with Lefty, who is facing personal problems and financial struggles. Upon request from his FBI supervisor, Pistone involves another undercover agent, Richie Gazzo from Miami, into the operation. With Pistone’s persuasion, Lefty agrees to collaborate with Richie and use his closed-down tavern to set up an illicit gambling scheme. Lefty’s ultimate goal is to win the favor of local mob leader, Santo Trafficante Jr., by hosting a lavish yacht party and gaining support for their new venture.
