Don't Drink the Water (1994)
Don’t Drink the Water (1994), an American made-for-television comedy film written and directed by Woody Allen, takes place in 1961 during the height of the Cold War. Mr. Magee, the US Ambassador to a smaller European posting behind the Iron Curtain, plays an important role in trying to end the war. His son, Axel Magee, is also part of the diplomatic corps at the same embassy and holds a Harvard degree. However, despite his education and position, Axel is known for being a total screw-up as a diplomat. Despite other qualified and capable staff members like Mr. Kilroy, Ambassador Magee appoints Axel as head of the embassy when he has to leave for several weeks to possibly be promoted to a position in the States.
Axel, the skilled diplomat, faces a challenging situation when the Hollander family from Newark, New Jersey – father Walter who works as a caterer, mother Marion who is a housewife, and their daughter Susan who just graduated college – seek refuge at the embassy due to false accusations of Walter being an American spy. Their stay at the embassy becomes more complicated with Walter’s refined palate not aligning with Chef Oscar’s regional cuisine, regular encounters with Father Drobney – a long-term refugee at the embassy who entertains guests with his magic tricks – and the impending arrival of an Arab Emir and his entourage which will result in limited space for residents at the embassy.
