An American film Don’t Look Up (2021), written and directed by Adam McKay in collaboration with David Sirota, follows the story of Kate Dibiasky. Dibiasky, a doctoral candidate at Michigan State University, makes a shocking discovery about an unknown comet. Her mentor Doctor Randall Mindy confirms this discovery: the comet will collide with Earth in six months, causing a global extinction event. NASA verifies the findings and invites Dibiasky, Mindy, and Dr. Teddy Oglethorpe (head of the Planetary Defense Coordination Office) to present their research to the White House. However, President Janie Orlean and her Chief of Staff Jason Orlean (who is also her son) show no concern for the news. Oglethorpe advises Dibiasky and Mindy to leak their findings to the media instead, which they do on The Daily Rip- a popular morning talk show.

Oglethorpe urges Dibiasky and Mindy to reveal the news to the media, which they do during a morning talk show. However, their efforts are met with mockery as hosts Jack Bremmer and Brie Evantee make light of the topic. Dibiasky becomes flustered and expresses her concerns about the threat, resulting in online criticism. Meanwhile, Mindy’s appearance receives positive attention from the public. Despite the gravity of the situation, the news about the comet’s threat goes largely unnoticed and is dismissed by Orlean’s Director of NASA – a non-astronomy expert who happens to be one of Orlean’s top donors. In an effort to distract from a sex scandal involving her Supreme Court nominee, Orlean confirms the threat and announces a plan to use nuclear weapons to divert it.
