Dorian Gray (2009)
The British film Dorian Gray (2009), adapted from Oscar Wilde’s 1890 novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, was directed by Oliver Parker and written by Toby Finlay. A young and naive Dorian Gray arrives in Victorian London to inherit an estate from his abusive grandfather. There, he is introduced to the lavish lifestyle of the city by the charming Lord Henry “Harry” Wotton. Under Henry’s influence, Gray becomes enamored with the idea of eternal youth and makes a reckless vow to keep his beauty by any means necessary. He falls in love with actress Sibyl Vane and proposes to her, but ultimately leaves her after being influenced by Henry and visiting a brothel. Sibyl tragically takes her own life, leaving behind a brokenhearted brother who confronts Gray about his actions. As Gray’s hedonistic lifestyle grows more extreme under Henry’s temptation, he becomes even further estranged from artist Basil Hallward, who had initially painted his portrait to capture his beauty.
Gray is shocked to discover that Hallward’s portrait of him has become distorted and twisted, reflecting the physical manifestation of his sins and injuries while he himself remains untouched. Despite having locked the painting away in the attic, Gray ultimately reveals it to Basil at his repeated insistence. Tragically, Gray kills Basil and disposes of his body in the River Thames, but the remains are eventually found and given a proper burial. Later on, Gray extends an invitation to Henry to join him in traveling the world, but Henry declines due to his wife’s pregnancy. When Gray reappears after 25 years, he astounds everyone with his unchanging youthful appearance. This captures the attention of Henry’s daughter Emily, much to her father’s disapproval.
