Double Jeopardy (1999) is a crime thriller movie and directed by Bruce Beresford. The main characters, Nick and Libby Parsons, are a wealthy couple living on Whidbey Island, Washington. In order to have some alone time together sailing, Libby’s friend Angela offers to take care of their son Matty for the weekend. However, when Libby wakes up she finds blood all over and Nick is nowhere to be found. The Coast Guard arrives and discovers Libby with a bloody knife in her hands. Despite the fact that Nick’s body is never found, Libby is convicted of murder. The belief is that she killed him for his $2 million life insurance policy and because she knew he was being investigated for embezzlement. In order to prevent their son from becoming a ward of the state, Libby asks Angela to adopt him while she serves her prison sentence.

But when Angela suddenly stops bringing Matty to visit, Libby decides to track her down in San Francisco and calls her. During their conversation, Nick walks in and Matty excitedly exclaims ‘Daddy!’ It is then that Libby realizes Nick faked his death. Following a failed attempt to receive investigative assistance, a fellow inmate, who happens to be a former lawyer, advises Libby to falsely confess remorse for ‘killing’ Nick in order to earn an early release for good behavior. Once granted parole, Libby would then be able to take revenge on Nick without facing any repercussions due to the Double Jeopardy Clause in the US Constitution. After serving six years behind bars, Libby is released to a halfway house where she is supervised by Travis Lehman, a parole officer and former law professor struggling with alcoholism after his wife and daughter left him.
